atlete mentoring

Happy coaching yourself but need some guidance to ensure your program is sound? We can mentor you to maximise  your performance.

What is Mentoring?

For more experienced athletes, a fully coached training program may not be required. Mentoring is a cheaper option where the athlete designs their own program under the supervision and guidance of an experienced, qualified coach. Once the program is underway, the coach continues regular check-ins with the athlete to review training data, adjust the program, prepare for key races and continue to build knowledge on subjects like training and race nutrition, equipment selection, mental toughness, race planning and recovery.

Why is it important?

Most athletes have limited time available to fully research everything there is to know about triathlon and sports performance. As coaches, we've undertaken extensive training on these topics and spend much of our spare time researching and building our knowledge. We're quickly able to distinguish fact from fiction on the internet and have tools and processes to efficiently develop effective training programs. For those who need a little more motivation or accountability, having a mentor coach by your side can give the competitive edge you're looking for.

What's included?

Mentoring is highly flexible and is built around the athlete's knowledge, experience and needs. There are typically 2 phases:

1. Program kick off and planning (2-6 weeks), including:

  • Data collection and review of historical training data in Training Peaks
  • Discussion on strengths/weaknesses and goals
  • Discussion on program and session design principles
  • Discussion on current equipment and potential upgrades
  • Review of draft program
  • Provide test protocols to set appropriate zones in Training Peaks
  • Discussion on injury mitigation and management, strength training and sports nutrition

2. Ongoing monitoring and advice:

  • Monthly catch up to review progress, suggest program changes and answer any questions. Discussion may include:
    • Review progress towards objectives
    • Jointly analyse data from key completed sessions to guide future sessions
    • Review Training Peaks performance dashboard
    • Discuss race planning  for any upcoming races
    • Discuss general health, injury management and nutrition

How much does it cost?

We charge a fixed fee for the program kick-off and planning and a monthly fee for ongoing monitoring and advice. The fees are lower than our weekly coaching fees so can be a great alternative if you're training on a budget. The fees vary depending on your program duration, complexity and level of mentoring support you require. Once we understand your needs we'll give you firm quote for the support you desire.
